MALIBU, CA-- Morgan Matthies scored his third goal of the day with just 0:17 left in the contest lifting Pepperdine to a 12-11 win over Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon in a key Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) men's water polo match in Malibu. With the win the Waves improve to 15-5 overall and 3-3 in the MPSF, while the 49ers fell to 14-10 overall and 3-3 in league play.
Long Beach held an 11-10 lead after senior Nathan Allard's fourth goal of the game at the 1:41 mark in the fourth quarter. The Waves were able to tie the game at 11-11 after a Josh Acosta goal just 13 seconds, and two ejections, later. After two missed 49er attempts, the Waves had one last chance and Matthies found the back of the net for the game-winner.
Allard and Erik Geoffroy both had four goals for the 49ers, while Reid Tomassi had two and David Del Grande one. Michael Hausmann and Matthies both had three goals for the Waves and Acosta scored twice.
The 49ers will be home on Sunday, November 9 when they host UCLA at 12 pm at the 49er Campus Pool.
