49ers Drop Opener of MPSF Championships to Cal

LBSU Drops MPSF Championship Opener to Cal LONG BEACH, CA--The Beach men's water polo team fell to Cal, 11-7, in first round play of the MPSF Championship Tournament. The 49ers fall to 14-14 on the year, while Cal improves to 19-6. Long Beach will face the loser of the USC/UCSB game Saturday at 3 pm at the Belmont Plaza Pool. Cal got off to a quick start early, scoring three goals in the first two minutes of play to lead 3-0. The Bears would never relinquish their lead throughout the game. Riley Brady gave Long Beach its first goal of the game on a power play with 3:57 remaining in the second quarter to bring the score to 3-1. The Beach converted on only one of seven power plays during the game. Long Beach brought the game to within two, 7-5, after a goal by Blake Bartak with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter. Cal went on to score four unanswered goals to push the score to 11-5 and put the game out of reach for the 49ers. Erik Geoffrey picked up his second goal of the game with 4:41 left to play to bring the score to 11-6. Dave Del Grande scored a goal as time ran out to end the game at 11-7.
