49ers Fall To Pepperdine, 11-10 Final Home Game For Eight Seniors November 22, 2003
LONG BEACH, CA-- Pepperdine (17-7) defeated Long Beach State (14-13) 11-10 in a non-conference men's water polo game on Saturday. It was the final home game for eight seniors on The Beach water polo team.
Jesse Smith's goal at 0:10 in the first quarter gave the Waves a 3-2 lead that they would never relinquish. Michael Hausmann led the Waves with three goals, while Morgan Matthies and Garrit Barth both scored twice for the #5 ranked Waves.
Long Beach State senior Nathan Allard was ejected at the end of the first half, resulting in a penalty shot for the Waves. Pepperdine's Scott Harvey connected on a 4-meter goal with 0:02 seconds left in the half to give the Waves a 7-3 halftime lead.
The Waves led 10-6 early in the fourth before the 49ers made a late run. Blake Bartak (4:22) and Reid Tomassi (1:35) both tallied goals to pull the 49ers to within 10-8. Pepperdine's Matthies scored his final goal of the game, which proved to be the game winner, at the 1:12 mark. Long Beach was able to score two more late goals with the final tally coming by John Foster with 0:14 seconds left.
Dave Del Grande, Tomassi, Bartak, and Foster all scored two goals for The Beach, while Brad Scoles and Erik Geoffrey each scored once. Senior goalie Michail Konstas, in just his third start of the season, finished with a season-high 13 saves.
The 49ers will next be in action on Friday, November 28 when they take on California in the first round of the 2003 MPSF Tournament at Belmont Plaza Pool.
