Beach Closes Regular Season Vs. Pepperdine Final Home Game For Six Seniors
November 17, 2003 The Record: Long Beach State is 14-12 overall and will host Pepperdine on Saturday at 12 pm in a non-conference game. The 49ers finished MPSF play at 3-5, tied for 5th place with Pepperdine and UC Irvine. Long Beach earned the #5 seed in the upcoming MPSF Tournament based on winning the tie-breaker (goal differential). Pepperdine is 16-7 overall. The Coach: Rick Azevedo is 72-63 (.533) in his fifth year as the head coach at Long Beach State. Azevedo was a busy man this summer as one of the assistant coach's for the U.S. Men's National Team. He traveled with the team to eight different countries over a span of 63 days. The trip culminated with a gold medal at the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic. The Series: The 49ers trail in their series with Pepperdine by a 50-24 count. The Waves have won both meetings this season against The Beach, winning 11-9 at the NorCal Tournament and 12-11 on November 8 in Malibu in an MPSF contest.
Last Week's Roundup: The 49ers lost 12-8 on Sunday to Stanford at the Campus Pool. The Cardinal jumped out to a 6-o first quarter lead and held on from there. Nathan Allard and Reid Tomassi both had three goals for the 49ers.
Geoffroy Hits Top 10: Junior Erik Geoffroy (Rossmoor/Los Alamitos HS) leads the team with 60 goals this season, a mark which ranks #8 all-time on the 49er single season chart. Geoffroy has scored at lest one goal in 24 of the 26 games and has 19 multiple-goal games this season. Last year Geoffroy recorded the fourth-best single season mark with 69 goals scored. The school record is a ways off, 92, set by Kyle Kopp in 1989.
Allard Ties Career-High: Senior Nathan Allard (La Habra/La Habra HS) tied his career-high for goals scored in a game on Nov. 8 at Pepperdine when he tallied four goals. Two times last year he hit that mark (Bucknell, LMU) and he is third on the team this season with 35 goals. Allard, who leads the squad this season in earned ejections with 87, has played well against the Waves this season scoring seven goals in the two outings vs. the Waves.
Career Scoring Chart: Junior Erik Geoffroy checks in with 132 career goals, moving him into the #9 spot on the 49er career chart. Senior Nathan Allard is tied for 12th all-time with 122 goals.
Freshman Scoring: True freshman Reid Tomassi (Winter Park, FL/Winter Park HS) has scored 43 goals this season, becoming one of the most prolific scoring freshmen in 49er history. Old records are sketchy, but it looks as if the freshman record for goals scored in a season was 45, set in 1994 by Greg Finley. Tomassi's 40 goals ranks second-best all-time among 49er freshmen. He has scored at lest one goal in his last 11 games, including five goals against both California and UCSB, and has 27 goals during the current 11-game span.
Del Grande Caps Senior Campaign: Senior David Del Grande (Novato/Marin Catholic HS) is closing out his senior season in fine fashion. A starter in all 26 games, Del Grande is fourth on the team with his 29 goals. In his 49er career he has scored 66 goals. He set a new career-high when he tallied five goals in a 10-5 win over St. Francis (NY) in October. Del Grande has scored at least one goal in 17 of the 26 games and has seven multiple-goal games. He tallied three goals against both Navy and UC Irvine at the NorCal tournament, where he scored eight goals in the four games.
Onyshko In The Net: Sophomore Thomas Onyshko (Simi Valley/Royal HS) has started in goal 24 times this season and has recorded 196 saves. He is averaging 8.58 saves per 28 minutes and also has an 8.62 GAA in 640 total minutes. Onyshko recorded a career-best 16 saves in the 49ers 9-5 win over UCLA on Sept. 21. His 196 saves this season is the 12th-best single season mark in school history. The school record is 276 saves, set by James Makshanoff during the 1987 campaign. Onyshko also had 319 career saves, which ranks him #9 all-time at LBSU.

Nathan Allard (La Habra), Kareem Captan (La Habra), David Del Grande (Novato), Pat Logan (Santa Ana), JasonPalda (Newport Beach), and Ken Turner (Houston, TX).
