49ers Drop Heartbreker to UCLA, 11-10
Beach Falls In 7th Place Game To UC Irvine In Nightcap
October 5, 2003 Stanford, CA-- Ted Peck scored the game-winning goal at the 1:38 mark in the second overtime period to lift UCLA to an 11-10 win over Long Beach State on Sunday morning at the NorCal Tournament. The 49ers then played in the 7th place game in the afternoon and dropped an 11-8 decision to UC Irvine. The #6-ranked 49ers are now 7-6 overall.
In a tight game all the way through, the 49ers were able to send the game into overtime as junior Erik Geoffroy scored with eight seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 9-9. The goal was Geoffroy's fourth of the game. He then scored his fifth goal at 1:40 in the first overtime to give the 49ers a 10-9 lead, but the Bruins tied the game at 10-10 as Peter Belden scored at the 0:57 mark.
UCLA led by as many as two goals during the game, the first was 6-4 at 6:35 in the third quarter and the second, 7-5, at 5:14. The 49ers were able to fight back as Geoffroy found the back of the net twice (3:53, 3:27) to tie the game at 7-7.
Peck led the Bruins with four goals and Josh Hewko added three. UCLA goalie Joseph Axelrod had five goalie saves, while his counterpart, Thomas Onyshko, had nine saves.
Against UCI, the Anteaters scored the final three goals of the game during a three-minute span in the fourth quarter to come away with the 11-8 win. Jason Palda scored to pull the 49ers to within 8-7, but UCI then tallied three consecutive goals to earn the win. David Del Grande had three goals for The Beach and Geoffroy added two, giving him 11 goals in the four weekend games.
The next game for the 49ers will be on Friday, October 10 when they play at UC San Diego at 6 pm.
