Del Grande Leads 49ers To Win Over Navy

49ers Defeat Navy In Opener, 11-7
David Del Grande Tallies Three Goals

Stanford, CA-- Senior David Del Grande scored three goals to lead the #6-ranked Long Beach State men's water polo team to an 11-7 win over Navy in their opening game at the Nor Cal Tournament at Avery Stadium Pool on the campus of Stanford University. In their second game The Beach fell to #3-ranked Pepperdine, 11-9. The 49ers, 7-4 on the year, will continue play at the NorCal Tournament on Sunday when they tangle with UCLA at 9:10 am at the Avery Stadium Pool on the Stanford campus.

Against the Midshipmen, Reid Tomassi and Erik Geoffroy both tallied two goals for the 49ers, while Nathan Allard, Jason Palda, Blake Bartak and Brad Scoles tallied one goal each. Del Grande scored two of his goals in the first quarter as The Beach jumped to a quick 4-1 lead. 49er goalie Thomas Onyskho had a big game with 13 goalie saves.

In the afternoon contest, Pepperdine got three goals each from Josh Acosta, Michael Hausmann and Jesse Smith to outlast the 49ers 11-9. Pepperdine led 6-4 at the half and 8-5 after three, but saw the 49er offense come alive in the fourth quarter with four goals. Allard led the way for the 49ers with three goals, while Geoffroy and Del Grande added two each.
