49ers Face A Busy Week Beach Plays At USC On Saturday/Host UCSB Sunday
October 28, 2003 The Record: It will be a busy weekend for the 49er men's water polo team as they play at USC on Saturday in a key MPSF game, and then play a doubleheader at home on Sunday. The Beach will play a league game vs. UCSB at 12 pm and then a non-league affair vs. Occidental at 3 pm. Both Sunday games will be at the 49er Campus Pool. LBSU is 12-8 overall and 2-1 in the MPSF after splitting games on its Northern California trip. The 49ers defeated Pacific (13-10) and lost to California (12-9). USC is 14-3 overall and 4-1 in the MSPF, while UCSB is 11-10 overall, but 0-3 in the MPSF.
The Coach: Rick Azevedo is 70-59 (.543) in his fifth year as the head coach at Long Beach State. Azevedo was a busy man this summer as one of the assistant coach's for the U.S. Men's National Team. He traveled with the team to eight different countries over a span of 63 days. The trip culminated with a gold medal at the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic.
Last Week's Roundup: The 49ers split two MPSF games in Northern California over the weekend, defeating Pacific (13-10) and losing to California (12-9). Reid Tomassi had seven goals in the two games. Pacific: Brad Scoles had three goals, while Tomassi, David Del Grande, and Nathan Allard all scored twice in the victory. The 49ers led 10-5 at the half, thanks to a six-goal second quarter. Goalie Thomas Onyshko had six goalie saves. California: The Golden Bears broke open a 4-4 tie in the second quarter with a 3-0 run and the 49er could never recover. Tomassi had a career-high five goals for the 49ers, but the Bears led by at least three goals the entire second half.
Erik Geoffroy Hits 50: Junior Erik Geoffroy (Rossmoor/Los Alamitos HS) scored two goals this past weekend, bringing his team-leading total to 50 for the year. Geoffroy, who has scored at least one goal in 19 of the 20 games this season, tallied 69 goals last year, the fourth-best single season total in school history.
Reid Tomassi Tallies Five Vs. Cal: True freshman Reid Tomassi (Winter Park, FL) scored a career-high five goals in Sunday's game at California. Tomassi, who also scored twice in Saturday's win at Pacific, is second on the team this season with 29 goals. He has scored in five consecutive games and has recorded 13 goals in his last five outings.
Win Streak Snapped: The 49ers had a modest five-game winning streak snapped on Sunday at Cal. The five-game streak was the longest since the 2001 season when the 49ers put together seven consecutive wins near the end of the season. Last year the 49ers had four three-game win streaks.
Career Scoring Chart: Junior Erik Geoffroy checks in with 122 career goals, tying him for 11th on the 49er career chart. Senior Nathan Allard has also eclipsed the 100-goal mark and is 15th all-time with 110 goals.
Scoring Pace Improves: The 49ers are averaging 9.80 goals per game through 20 games, having hit double digits in goals 11 times. Last season the 49ers averaged 8.58 goals per game and hit double digits in scoring 10 times.
Freshman Scoring: True freshman Reid Tomassi has scored 29 goals this season, becoming one of the most prolific scoring freshmen in 49er history. Old records are sketchy, but it looks as if the freshman record for goals scored in a season was 45, set in 1994 by Greg Finley.
