Cal Escapes With 12-9 Win Reid Tomassi Scores 5 Goals For The 49ers October 26, 2003
Berkeley, CA-- The #2-ranked California Golden Bears used a 3-0 run late in the second quarter to take command of the game and come away with a 12-9 victory over #7 Long Beach State on Sunday afternoon in Berkeley. Freshman Reid Tomassi had a career-high five goals for The Beach (12-8/2-1 MPSF), but Cal (15-4/3-2 MPSF) got three goals from All-American Attila Banhidy to secure the win. The loss snapped a five-game 49er win streak.
After a 3-3 first quarter, Cal took a brief lead on a goal by Banhidy early in the quarter. The 49ers came right back as Tomassi scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity at 3:52 to tie the game at 4-4. From then on it was all Cal as the Golden Bears out-scored the 49ers 3-0 the remainder of the quarter. Brian Kinsel had both of his goals in that 3-0 run. The 49ers were never able to get any closer than three goals the remainder of the game.
David Del Grande, Nathan Allard, Erik Geoffroy and Blake Bartak scored the other 49er goals on the day and goalie Thomas Onyshko had six saves.
Banhidy, Quist, Kinsel and Vailjevic all scored two goals each for Cal.
The 49ers will next be in action next Saturday, Nov. 1 when they play at USC.
