Strong Opening Day For 49ers At ITA Regional
Claudia Argumedo Wins Two Matches To Advance To Main Singles Draw
October 23, 2003 SAN DIEGO, CA-- Long Beach State junior Claudia Argumedo won her two matches in the singles qualifying portion of the 2003 ITA Women's Western Regional Championships in San Diego on Thursday. Argumedo advances to Friday's main draw, giving the 49ers four singles players in the 64-player bracket.
Argumedo won her opeing match, 6-3, 6-1, over UC Riverside's Kelley Takeshita. She then came back to defeat Kana Aikawa (Hawaii), 6-1, 6-0. The 49ers had six players in action Thursday in the qualifying rounds, but Argumedo was the only one to advance to the main draw. Alanah Carroll won her opening match over Natalie Jacobs (UCI), 6-2, 6-3, and then dropped a tough 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 decision to UCSB's Mirielle Gruenig. Krystina Katayama defeated Sayaka Yoshimoto (CSUN), 6-2, 6-3 in her first match, but then fell to Kate Jolson (UCLA), 6-2, 6-3. Kelly Chan, Sandra Rocha and Jessica Konrad all lost their opening matches.
Argumedo will play UNLV's Anne Claire Ortiz Luis on Friday in the main draw, joining Lindsey Marvel, Tammy Day and Nicole Bouffler.
In doubles, two 49er teams advanced to the main draw. Chan/Rocha defeated Hulb/Fermin (LMU), 8-4 in the second round, while Marvel/Carroll knocked off Takeshita/Yoshimoto (CSUN) 8-1 to advance. The only doubles team to fall was Argumedo/Katayama, who lost to Jaros/Aikawa (Hawaii), 9-8 (5).
Chan/Rocha and Marvel/Carroll join Bouffler/Day in the doubles main draw on Friday.
