49ers Head To Northern California Beach Plays At Pacific On Saturday, Cal On Sunday
October 22, 2003 The Records: Fresh off a 7-5 win at UC Irvine in its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) opener, Long Beach State will head to Northern California this weekend for two key league games. Saturday, the 49ers (11-7/1-0) play at Pacific and then on Sunday they play at California. Pacific heads into the week at 5-11 overall and 0-3 in the MPSF. Cal, hich host UC Irvine on Saturday, is 13-4 overall and 1-2 in league play. The Coach: Rick Azevedo is 69-58 (.543) in his fifth year as the head coach at Long Beach State. Azevedo was a busy man this summer as one of the assistant coach's for the U.S. Men's National Team. He traveled with the team to eight different countries over a span of 63 days. The trip culminated with a gold medal at the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic. Last Week's Roundup: The 49ers had just one game that counted last week and that was Sunday's 7-5 MPSF opening win at UC Irvine. The Beach played an exhibition game on Wednesday vs. the U.S. National Team, and lost 20-3, but that did not count on the 49ers record. At UCI, Erik Geoffroy scored five goals and Thomas Onyshko had 13 goalie saves as the 49ers earned the 7-5 victory over the Anteaters. Jason Palda and Reid Tomassi scored the other goals for the 49ers. Erik Geoffroy Steps Up Again: Junior Erik Geoffroy (Rossmoor/Los Alamitos HS) stepped up once again in a big game as he scored five goals in the 49ers 7-5 win at UC Irvine on Sunday. The five goals ties his previous career-high which he set three times in 2002 and once earlier this season (5 goals vs. UCLA). Geoffroy has scored at least two goals in 16 of the 18 games this season and leads the squad with 48 goals. Senior Jason Palda A Steady Force: Senior Jason Palda (Newport Beach/Corona del Mar HS) has been a steady force all season-long for the 49ers. Palda has scored eight goals this season and has been in the starting lineup in 16 of the 18 games. The two games he did miss were the Sunday games at the Navy Open after he had suffered an injury in Saturday's final game of the day. Palda, who scored a goal on Sunday at UC Irvine, had just 10 career goals heading into this season. Freshman Reid Tomassi Continues To Impress: True freshman Reid Tomassi (Winter Park, FL) has started in all 18 games this season and is second on the team with 22 goals. Tomassi scored one goal in the 49ers 7-5 win at UC Irvine. Tomassi has scored six goals in his last three games and has tallied a goal in 11 of the 18 games this season. His three tallies vs. Cal Baptist on Oct. 11 tied his career-high which he set twice earlier this season against Johns Hopkins and UC Irvine. Thomas Onyshko In The Cage: Sophomore goalie Thomas Onyshko (Simi Valley/Royal HS) recorded 13 goalie saves in the 49ers 7-5 win at UC Irvine. Onyshko had recorded double-digits in saves five times this season, including a career-high 16 in the 49ers 9-5 win over UCLA at the SoCal Tournament. Onyshko is averaging 8.77 saves per game and has a 7.57 GAA having started 17 of the 18 games this season. With 139 saves already this season, Onyshko is 17th on the 49er single season chart. The school-record for saves in a single season is 276, set by James Makshanoff in 1987. Career Scoring Chart: Junior Erik Geoffroy checks in with 120 career goals, placing him 12th on the 49er career chart. Senior Nathan Allard has also eclipsed the 100-goal mark and is 15th all-time with 107 goals. Scoring Pace Improves: The 49ers are averaging 9.67 goals per game through their first 18 games, having hit double digits in goals 10 times. Last season the 49ers averaged 8.58 goals per game and hit double digits in scoring 10 times. MPSF Statistics: In the latest MPSF statistics, 49er junior Erik Geoffroy leads the league with 48 total goals. Geoffroy is third in goals per game at 2.67. Stanford's Tony Azevedo leads in that category at 3.46 goals per game with 45 goals in 13 contests. Goalie thomas Onyshko is first in goalie saves at 8.18 per game. In the team stats, the 49ers are fifth in goals per game at 9.67 and seventh in goals allowed per game at 7.44. Stanford has the most prolific offense, averaging 11.64 goals per game and Pepperdine has the stingiest defense with a 6.00 GAA.
