Beach Wins MPSF Opener, 7-5 Over UC Irvine Erik Geoffroy Scores 5 Goals For The 49ers
October 19, 2003 IRVINE, CA-- Junior Erik Geoffroy (Rossmoor/Los Alamitos HS) scored five goals to lead #7-ranked Long Beach State to a 7-5 win over #8 UC Irvine on Sunday afternoon at the Anteater Aquatics Complex in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) opener for both squads. With the win the 49ers improve to 11-7 overall and 1-0 in the MPSF, while UCI falls to 8-10 and 0-1.
Geoffroy's goal with 1:01 remaining in the second quarter gave the 49ers a 3-2 halftime lead and LBSU would never trail after that. Geoffroy scored back-to-back goals, including one on a penalty shot, late in the third quarter to extend the 49ers' lead to 6-3. His final goal with 4:29 left in the game gave Long Beach a 7-4 lead.
49er goalie Thomas Onyshko had a strong outing, finishing with 13 saves. The other 49er goals were scored by freshman Reid Tomassi and senior Jason Palda. Phil Garcia led UCI with three goals.
The five goals scored by Geoffroy ties his career-high. Three times in the 2002 season Geoffroy tallied three goals and he also accomplished the feat earlier this season against UCLA at the NorCal Tournament on October 5.
Long Beach State will hit the road again for its next two matches as they play at Pacific on saturday, October 25 and then face Cal, in Berkeley, the next day.
