Bouffler & Day Win Doubles Championship
October 12, 2003 FULLERTON, CA-- The Long Beach State doubles team of Tammy Day and Nicole Bouffler defeated their teammates Lindsey Marvel and Alanah Carroll on Sunday in the championship doubles final at the 2003 Cal State Fullerton Fall Intercollegiate tournament at the Titan Tennis Courts.
With seven of eleven 49ers in action the final day of the tournament, the overall impression for the weekend was good.
"We played very well in doubles and now know what we need to work on in singles," said Coach Hilt-Costello. "We have a couple players who ran out of gas today but I like where we appear to be in comparison to our conference opponents. Other than Cal Poly who we haven't seen, I like where we are at."
Day and Bouffler, who entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed, defeated teammates Lindsey Marvel and Alanah Carroll, 8-4, to bring home the doubles championship trophy.
In the consolation bracket, UCSB's Leslie Damion was the singles champion, defeating the 49ers' Carroll, 8-1, while the Long Beach State duo of Claudia Argumedo and Krystina Katayama defeated Cal State Fullerton's Caroline Freeman and Ashley Dunbar, 8-5, to clinch the consolation championship.
In main draw singles semi-final, Bouffler fell to Pepperdine's Karin Schlapbach 6-4, 6-2. While in consolation singles, Alanah Carroll won twice before falling in the final to Leslie Damion, also of UCSB, 8-1. In high eighty-degree heat and due to slow tournament progression because so many Long Beach players were advancing in both singles and doubles, Damion reached the final having played fewer matches than Carroll on Sunday.
Long Beach State is next in action October 23-26 at the ITA Southwest Regional in San Diego. Singles Main Draw – Semifinal
