Del Grande's Goal In Sudden DeathLifts 49ers Over Queens College September 8, 2002 ANNAPOLIS, MD-- The Long Beach State men’s water polo team split two games on Sunday at the 2002 Navy Open. The Beach won a thrilling 10-9 game in the morning against Queens College which went into sudden death. Two hours later the 49ers came back and played St. Francis (NY) and fell in that contest 10-9. The 49ers are 3-1 on the season.
In the first game, David Del Grande scored with 2:32 left in sudden death to give the 49ers the 10-9 triumph. Long Beach State led 3-1 at the half and 4-1 early on in the third quarter, but Queens College fought back behind Michael Viera and John Proknin, who both tallied three goals in the game. Proknin scored two goals to bring Queens to within 6-5 and then tied the game at 9-9 with his goal at the 1:22 mark in the second overtime. The 49ers lead early in each overtime period only to see their opponent come back and tie the contest. The 49ers led 8-7 in the second overtime period after Aaron Holloway’s third goal of the game at 2:35. Queens tied the game at 8-8 at 1:47, Erik Geoffroy then scored his second goal of the game at 1:38 to give LBSU a 9-8 lead. Proknin’s goal at 1:22 was the final goal of the second overtime. Kellyn Carlson also scored three goals for The Beach.
In the second game, the 49ers fell behind 4-1 after one quarter and 8-4 at the half. Long Beach finally tied the game at 8-8 on Del Grande’s goal at 1:20 in the third quarter after outscoring the Terriers 4-0 in the quarter. The only 49er lead came in the fourth quarter when Holloway scored his third goal of the game at the 4:48 mark to give LBSU a 9-8 lead. St. Francis answered right back scoring at 4:09 and then finishing with the game-winner at the 0:28 mark on a goal by Victor Vrdowak. 49er goalie Michael Konstas had 11 saves in the game.
