| September 28, 2002 LONG BEACH, CA-- The Long Beach State men's water polo team got back in the win column on Saturday with an 11-9 win over Cal Baptist in the first game and a 19-0 win over Occidental in the second in a doubleheader at the 49er Campus Pool. The Beach, ranked #8 in the country, improved to 6-7 with the victories.
In the opening game, 49er sophomore Erik Geoffroy (Rossmoor) had a career-high four goals, while Aaron Holloway (El Segundo) and Nathan Allard (La Habra) each added two as LBSU snapped a six-game losing skid. Long Beach broke away from a 2-2 tie with four consecutive goals over the final 0:30 of the first quarter and four minutes into the second. Allard scored both of his goals in that run, including a goal at the 2:50 mark in the second quarter which gave the 49ers a 6-2 lead. Pat Logan's goal at the 3:03 mark in the third quarter gave the 49ers a 9-5 advantage, but Cal Baptist fought back with three goals in the final 2:40 of the third quarter to pull to within 9-8. Steve Dugger (2:40), Phiripes (1:49) and Goran Milic (1:00) tallied for the Lancers.
CBU tied the contest with its fourth consecutive goal as Jonathan Smiley scored at the 2:34 mark in the fourth to tie the game at 9-9. Geoffroy then took over, scoring at the 2:05 mark and scoring his final goal at 1:23 on a four-meter penalty shot.
In the afternoon contest, Thousand Oaks products James Durley and Thomas Onyshko led the 49ers to a 19-0 rout of Occidental. Durley (Thousand Oaks HS), a sophomore, scored a career-high five goals and Onyshko (Royal HS), a redshirt freshman, earned his first start in goal and shutout the Tigers while recording 10 goalie saves. Holloway, David Del Grande (Novato), Ken Turner (Houston, TX), Kareem Captan (La Habra) and Sean MacKenzie (Walnut Creek) all scored two goals for the victorious 49ers.
