HOUSTON, TX--The Long Beach State women’s tennis team began the fall portion of its schedule at the 2002 Rice Tennis Classic at Kingwood Country Club in Humble, TX. The 49ers have three players alive in the consolation bracket of singles competition, while the doubles team of freshman Megan Biorkman (Irvine/University HS) and junior Kelly Chan (Kona, HI) won their opening match to advance to the championship quarterfinals. Teams competing at the tournament are: Long Beach State, Rice, Minnesota, Arizona, LSU and SMU.
In first round singles action, sophomore Laura Thomas (London, England) won her first match, 6-4, 6-2, over Annie Goodrich of Rice. Thomas then fell in the second round to Arizona’s nationally-ranked Maja Mlakar, 6-2, 6-0. Sophomore Claudia Argumedo (San Salvador, El Salvador) won her opening match over Erika Villalobos of Rice, 7-5, 6-0. Argumedo fell in the second round to SMU’s Allison Leuszter, 6-4, 6-1.
Lindsey Marvel (Albuquerque, NM), Biorkman and Chan all lost their opening round singles matches, but all won their next match in the consolation bracket. Marvel defeated Blair Olsesa of Rice 6-3, 6-2, Chan downed Natasha Morozova of Rice, 6-1, 6-0 and Biorkman got past Stephanie Moet of Rice, 7-5, 6-0. Biorkman played well in her opening round singles match, her first as a collegiate player, falling in three sets to Arizona’s Kelly Perry, 6-1, 4-6, 4-6.
Action continues on Saturday and Sunday with both singles and doubles action.
