49ers Fall To Stanford In Second Game, 10-6 September 14, 2002 LOS ANGELES, CA-- The Long Beach State mens water polo, ranked #9 in the country this week, team won its opening game at the 2002 Southern California Tournament on Saturday morning, defeating #8 UC San Diego, 7-5, at McDonald's Swim Stadium on the campus of USC. In the afternoon, the #1-ranked Stanford Cardinal defeated the 49ers 10-6. LBSU is now 4-2 overall, UCSD is 4-3 and Stanford 3-0.
Against UCSD, the 49ers trailed 3-1 at the half, but outscored UCSD 6-2 in the second half. David Del Grande had two goals, as did newcomer Brad Scoles. Nathan Allard, Aaron Holloway and Kellyn Carlson all added one goal. Goalie Michael Konstas had eight goalie saves. Jonathan Hopkins led UCSD with two goals.
Stanford received three goals each from Tony Azevedo and Mike Derso to come away with the 10-6 win. The Cardinal jumped to a 9-0 halftime lead and coasted in from there. Del Grande and Erik Geoffroy both had two goals for the 49ers, while Holloway and Pat Logan added single tallies. In goal, Stanford's Nick Ellis recorded six goalie saves in the first half. For the 49ers, Konstas had three saves in the first half and redshirt freshman Thomas Onyshko, in his first action as a 49er, tallied five saves in the second half while allowing just one Stanford goal.
The 49ers will play UCLA on Sunday at 8:00 am in their first game of the day.
