Azevedo's Daughter One of Two Headed to The Beach LONG BEACH, CA-- Head Womens Water Polo Coach Rick Azevedo announced today that his daughter and four-time first team All-CIF pick Cassie Azevedo (Long Beach, CA/Wilson High) and Canadian Junior National team captain Tara Campbell (Baie Durfee, Quebec) have signed National Letters of Intent for the 2003 season.
Azevedo has been a member of the National program since 1999, is a four-time Moore League MVP and finished her prep career fourth all-time in CIF scoring. Cassies older brother Tony, is currently a freshman for National Champion Stanford as well as being a member of the U.S. National Team. Cassie is the second Azevedo to wear the Black and Gold, as her father, Rick played for LBSU in 1978 and 1979. The elder Azevedo is currently in his third season at the helm of both the mens and womens teams at Long Beach State.
Campbell is the third 49er to hail from outside the continental United States, joining current players Roberta Stewart (New Zealand) and Angelica Garcia (Puerto Rico). Campbell was a member of the 2002 Canadian National Team helping the team to a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England.
The two incoming freshmen join a 49er team that is currently ranked No. 4 in the country and finished the 2002 campaign with a school-record 19-13 mark. The Beach are slated to return six of seven starters to next years club. |
