Beach Seeded Fifth, Play CS Northridge to Open Play

49ers Play at MPSF Championships: No. 7 Long Beach State (17-11, 6-5 MPSF) has already set school records this season for overall wins and conference victories. Next up for The Beach will be the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament, this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at USCs campus pool. At stake is an automatic berth to the Final Four for the winner, and most likely an at-large bid to second place, May 11 and 12, also at USC. The MPSF is considered the toughest conference in the country, with nine of nations top-10 teams from the MPSF.
Tourney Schedule: LBSU is seeded fifth, their highest ever seeding, and will take on twelfth-seed CS Northridge (5-20, 0-11) at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, with the winner playing fourth-seeded Cal (16-7, 8-3) at 4:45 p.m. During the regular season, LBSU defeated CSUN 9-5, and lost to Cal 11-5. The Beach are 0-4 in the first round of the MPSF and are 3-14 overall at the tourney, never finishing higher than sixth (2000).

Head Coach: Ricardo Azevedo is in his third season with The Beach with a 51-47 mark. Azevedo also coaches the 49er mens team. Azevedo is also an assistant with the Mens National Team.
Rank and File: The 49ers fell to No. 7 this week after being rank No. 5, earlier, tying the 2001 team for their highest ever national ranking.
Stewing Up the Pool: Freshman Roberta Stewart leads the club with 60 goals, having scored five vs. UCSD of April 14 to earn MPSF Player of the Week honors, and a single-game tying six at UC Irvine on April 18. The 60 goals is the fourth-best single-season total and ranks eighth-best all-time at LBSU.
Saving the Best for Last: Freshman Bri Hawkins (San Diego) is 12-5 as the teams starting goalie over the final two months. Hawkins has 147 saves so far this season, third-best all-time and third-best in a single-season. Hawkins 17 saves earlier at Pacific on April 5, set the single-game record.
Century Mark: Sophomore Angelica Garcia (Cantano, Puerto Rico) is the fourth 49er to eclipse 100 goals in her career. Garcia, a third team All-American in 2001, has 103 career goals and is second on the team with 45 this year.
Seniors Closing Out Careers: Amanda Wightman (San Diego) will finish her career as the all-time save leader with 552 saves, while Stacy Black (Los Alamitos) with 162 career goals is two ahead of teammate Ashley Richardson (San Diego) for the all-time top scorer in LBSU history. |
