49ers Head to MPSF Championships Next Week NORTHRIDGE, CA-No. 7-ranked Long Beach State (17-11, 6-5 MPSF) closed out the regular season with two straight wins, defeating CS Northridge (5-19, 0-10 MPSF) 9-5 on Saturday afternoon. CSUN made a late comeback, scoring four goals in the second half, but it was not enough as The Beach led 7-1 at halftime. With six wins in conference, it is the first time in school-history that The Beach finished with a winning conference record, as the win also set a school-record for wins in a season, set last year when the team went 16-14. The 49ers had a big second quarter as they scored six goals, led by Angelica Garcia's two-goal quarter. Garcia along with Robyn Gordin would led The Beach with two goals a piece for the contest. Matador sophomore Pam Barba recorded her sixth mulit-goal game this season, as she scored three goals in the second half. Trailing 7-1 at the half, the Matadors came out firing in the second half, capitalizing on two-man advantages in the fourth quarter. Barba scored two of her three goals on the man-advantage. Jamie McGray started the offense for the Matadors as she scored at the 4:01 mark in the second quarter, and Melissa Hall followed up, scoring at 2:16 in the third. The 49ers received two goals from freshman Gordin, who scored at the 2:54 mark in the second quarter and again at the 4:30 mark in the third quarter. Bri Hawkins and Amanda Wightman split time in the net for The Beach, with Hawkins picking up four saves in the first half, while Wightman had three in the second. The Beach will head to the MPSF Championships held at USC next week. | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | Overall | | LBSU | 1 | 6 | 1 | 1 | 9 | | CSUN | 0 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 5 |
