Stewart & Wawrzynski Score 2Goals Each
LONG BEACH, CA -- Number two ranked UCLA rebounded from a 3-1 second quarter deficit to come back and defeat #8-ranked Long Beach State, 6-4, on Saturday afternoon at the 49er Campus Pool. The Bruins, 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), were led by Maureen Flanagan (Honolulu, HI) and Amber Stachowski (Rancho Santa Margarita), who both tallied two goals. The 49ers fell to 6-7 overall and 1-3 in the MPSF with the loss.
UCLA took a 1-0 lead at 3:53 in the first quarter as Stachowski found the back of the net. The 49ers came right back to score the next three goals and put the Bruins ina 3-1 hole. Roberta Stewart (Auckland, New Zealand) scored the first of her two goals at 3:35 and then came back at 2:17 in the first to score again. Drue Wawrzynski (Garden Grove) scored at 3:17 in the second quarter giving the 49ers a 3-1 lead.
Thalia Munro (Santa Barbara) began a five-goal run by the Bruins when she scored at 2:48 in the second quarter. Flanagan (2:03) and Natalie Golda (0:09) scored to close out the half and give UCLA a 4-3 halftime advantage.
Both teams played great defense in the second half, as there were just three goals scored. Stachowski scored at 3:47 in the third to give UCLA a 5-3 lead and Flanagan tallied her second goal of the game at 1:27 inthe fourth to seal the win. Long Beach scored a late goal at 0:01 by Wawrzynski to make the final score, 6-4.
In goal, the Bruins Jaime Hipp (Fresno) recorded three goalie saves, while her counterpart from Long Beach State, Bri Hawkins (San Diego) recorded six.
