LONG BEACH, CA-- Jeff Powers scored four goals and UC Irvine outscored Long Beach State 4-1 in the third quarter to come away with a 10-5 win in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) men's water polo game on Wednesday evening at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos. Dreason Barry and Garrett Gentry added two goals apiece as well for UCI as the Anteaters improved to 13-7 overall and 4-3 in the MPSF. Aaron Holloway scored two goals for The Beach, which fell to 13-14 and 1-6 in league play.
Long Beach got on the scoreboard first at 4:35 in the first as Nick Becskehazy found the back of the net. UCI then rattled off four consecutive goals over a span of 4:40 to grab a 4-1 lead. Powers scored his first goal at 2:10 in the first and then concluded the four-goal run with his second goal at 4:30 in the second quarter. The 49ers Erik Geoffroy scored at 2:55 in the second to cut the deficit to 4-2 at halftime.
Irvine took control of the game by scoring three goals to begin the third quarter. Gentry found the back of the net at 5:12 for his second tally, and then Powers scored back-to-back goals at 4:07 and 2:03 giving the Anteaters a 7-2 lead. After Holloway's first goal at 1:49 in the third cut the lead to 7-3, UCI then tallied at the 1:26 mark on Barry's first goal and then pushed the lead to 9-3 as Phil Garcia scored at 3:12 in the fourth.
Long Beach State took 31 shots in the game, but missed wide or hit the goalposts numerous times. UCI goalie Doug Finfrock recorded five goalie saves, while his counterpart for the 49ers, Thomas Onyshko, had eight saves.
Long Beach will be in action on Friday when they play an MPSF game at UCLA at 3 pm.
