The Records: The 49ers are 13-13 overall and 1-5 in the MPSF as they head into a very important week. The 49ers host UC Irvine on Wednesday and then travel to UCLA on Friday for their final two league contests of the season. UC Irvine is 12-7 overall and 3-3 in the MPSF. UCLA is 10-6 overall and 2-3 in the MPSF.
The Coach: Rick Azevedo is 54-48 (.529) in his fourth year as the head coach at Long Beach State.
Series Records: The 49ers trail in their series with UC Irvine by a 57-18 count. The two teams met on Sept. 18 at UCI in a non-league affair, and the Anteaters came out on top 10-9. The 49ers trail in their series with UCLA by a 55-17 count. UCLA defeated the 49ers 4-2 on Sept. 15 at the SoCal Tournament.
Beach Wins Two Games: The 49ers earned two wins in one day last Saturday as they defeated UC San Diego, 11-7, and UC Santa Cruz, 10-7. In the opener, Erik Geoffroy tallied three goals and Nathan Allard and Aaron Holloway had two each in the win. LBSU led 5-3 at the half and put the game away by outscoring UCSD 4-0 in the third quarter. Goalie Thomas Onyshko recorded a career-high 14 goalie saves. In the second game, Geoffroy and David Del Grande both had two goals to led the 49ers. LBSU led 8-3 at the half and goalie Michael Konstas had five goalie saves.
Holloway A Senior Leader: Senior Aaron Holloway (El Segundo) continues to have a stellar senior campaign as he scored three goals in the two wins last weekend. Holloway is second on the team with 44 goals and has tallied at least one goal in 16 consecutive games and he's scored in 24 of the 26 games this season. Holloway has 111 career goals as a 49er, placing him at #13 on the career goal chart. His 15 multiple-goal games is second on the team.
Onyshko Sets Career-High: Redshirt freshman Thomas Onyshko (Thousand Oaks) had an outstanding game last Saturday vs. UC San Diego. Onyshko, in his fifth start of the season, recorded a career-high 14 goalie saves in the 49ers 11-7 triumph. Onyshko is now averaging 9.17 saves per game and has recorded double-digits in saves three times this season (10 vs. Occidental, 11 at UC Santa Cruz, 14 vs. UCSD).
Geoffroy Delivers: Sophomore Erik Geoffroy (Rossmoor) has scored 46 goals this season, first on the team. His 46 goals ties him for 20th on the 49er single season chart. He has quite a way to break the school-record of 92 goals though, set by Kyle Kopp in 1989. Geoffroy has scored at least one goal in 20 of the 26 games and he leads the team with 16 multiple-goal outings. He recorded a career-best five goals on Oct. 5 vs. LMU at the NorCal Tournament. At the NorCal Tournament in Berkeley, he tallied 13 goals in the four games.
Del Grande Shines: Junior David Del Grande (Novato) scored three goals in the two games last weekend and has scored at least one goal in seven of the last nine outings. Del Grande is fifth on the team with 24 goals scored, including five games with multiple-goals. Saturday vs. UC Santa Cruz he scored twice. On Oct. 6 at the NorCal Tournament, he scored a career-best three goals in the 49ers win over Princeton.
Konstas In Goal: Sophomore Michael Konstas (Athens, Greece) has recorded 144 goalie saves this season for an average of 7.20 saves per game. With his 144 saves, Konstas is #16 on the 49er single season save chart. The school-record was set in 1987 by James Makshanoff, as he recorded 276 saves.
