LONG BEACH, CA-- William Rodriguez scored three goals and Karl Niehaus two as Pepperdine rolled to an 11-6 win over Long Beach State Saturday afternoon at the 49er Campus Pool in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) men's water polo game. The Waves, ranked #6 nationally, improved to 10-6 overall and 5-1 in the MPSF. Pepperdine is currently in first place in the MPSF. The 49ers, ranked #9 in the country, fell to 10-13 and 0-5 in league play.
Pepperdine broke open a tied game at 4-4 with four consecutive goals beginning at the 1:02 mark in the second quarter and ending at 4:18 in the third to take command of the game. Niehaus scored his second goal at 1:02 to give the Waves a 5-4 lead and then Jeremy Grubbs found the back of the net at 0:13 to give Pepperdine a 6-4 halftime lead. Rodriguez tallied at 5:58 in the third and Josh Acosta at 4:18 making the Wave advantage 8-4.
Junior Nathan Allard and senior Aaron Holloway both tallied two goals for the 49ers. Allard's second goal at 2:27 in the second tied the game at 4-4. Holloway scored his second goal at 3:00 in the third, cutting the deficit to 8-5, but the Waves scored three quick goals to begin the fourth quarter and put the game away.
Pepperdine goalie Michael Soltis recorded eight goalie saves on the afternoon while his 49er counterpart, Michael Soltis, had nine saves.
