SAN DIEGO, CA-- The Long Beach State women's tennis team had a tough opening day at the 2002 Omni Hotels Western Regional Tournament in San Diego on Thursday. The 49ers had all three singles players, and one doubles team, eliminated in the Qualifying Rounds.

In the opening singles round, Kelly Chan defeated Carla Rocha (CS Fullerton), 6-4, 7-5. Megan Biorkman also won her first round match, defeating Anne Rapp of San Diego, 6-0, 6-4. Claudia Argumedo fell in her first match, 6-2, 6-4, to Laura Gordon of UCLA.

In the second round, Chan fell 6-4, 6-2 to San Diego's Tara Livesay, while Biorkman fell to Pollina Krauets of Hawai'i, 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles qualifying, Chan/Biorkman fell to Takeshita/Mitchell of UC Riverside, 8-6. All three singles players are eliminated from the tournament.

Long Beach still has two players competing in singles action and one doubles team in the Main Draw. Lindsey Marvel takes on Natalie Braverman (Pepperdine) on Thursday, while Laura Thomas meets up with UNLV's Leentjie Oosthuizen. Marvel/Thomas will meet Yeats/Colalillo of Arizona State in the doubles Main Draw.

Pollina Krauets (Hawaii) def. Megan Biorkman (LBSU), 6-3, 6-1

DOUBLES QUALIFYING FIRST ROUND

Takeshita/Mitchell (UC Riverside) def. Chan/Biorkman (LBSU), 8-6
