The Records: The 49ers look to get into the win column in MPSF play this weekend when they host Pepperdine on Saturday and travel to UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. The 49ers are 10-12 overall and 0-4 in league action. Pepperdine is 9-6 overall and 4-1 in the MPSF. UCSB is 6-11 overall and 0-3 in the MPSF. UCSB hosts Cal on Saturday.
The Coach: Rick Azevedo is 51-47 (.520) in his fourth year as the head coach at Long Beach State.
Series Records: The 49ers trail in their series with Pepperdine by a 47-22 count. The Waves defeated the 49ers 10-6 in the SoCal Tournament on Sept. 15. The 49ers lead their series with UCSB by a 37-34 count. The Gauchos won at Long Beach on Oct. 13, 9-7, in a non-conference affair.
Beach Drops Two Of Three: The 49ers hit Northern California this weekend, but dropped two of their three games. The weekend got off to a good start as LBSU defeated UC Santa Cruz, 13-4. Erik Geoffroy, Aaron Holloway and Nathan Allard all had two goals and Thomas Onyshko was in goal, recording a career-high 11 saves. Saturday the 49ers fell at Stanford, 14-6. Holloway and Kellyn Carlson had two goals each, but Tony Azevedo had four and Mike Derse three. Sunday the 49ers dropped a tough 10-9 overtime decision at Pacific. The Tigers scored at the 1:28 mark in the second overtime to escape with the win. Carlson had three goals for the 49ers, Geoffroy added two.
Carlson Shines: Senior Kellyn Carlson (Tacoma, WA) had a strong eekend for the 49ers as he tallied five goals. Carlson scored twice in the loss at Stanford and then scored three goals in the game at Pacific. The three goals ties his career-high, which he set earlier this season against Queens College. Carlson is just one of two seniors on the 2002 roster and is tied for fourth on the team with 20 goals.
Holloway Continues Great Play: Senior Aaron Holloway (El Segundo/El Segundo HS) scored five goals in the three games this week, giving him 38 on the season, second-best on the team. Holloway has tallied at least one goals in 20 of the 22 games this season and he has scored a goal in 12 consecutive games. Holloway has 105 career goals as a 49er, tying him for #13 on the career goal chart. His 13 multiple-goal games is second on the team.
Geoffroy Leads In Scoring: Sophomore Erik Geoffroy (Rossmoor) leads the 49ers in scoring this season with 40 goals. With four more goals he will tie himself for #24 on the 49er single season chart with 44 goals. He has quite a way to break the school-record of 92 goals though, set by Kyle Kopp in 1989. Geoffroy has scored at least one goal in 17 of the 22 games and he leads the squad with 14 multiple-goal outings. He recorded a career-best five goals on Oct. 5 vs. LMU at the NorCal Tournament. He also tallied four goals vs. Cal Baptist (9/28) and UC San Diego (10/6) this season. At the NorCal Tournament in Berkeley, he tallied 13 goals in the four games.
Onyshko In Net: Redshirt freshman Thomas Onyshko (Thousand Oaks) started his third game of the season on Friday at UC Santa Cruz, and recorded a career-high 11 goalie saves in the 13-4 triumph. Onyshko, who also started in goal against Occidental and UC Santa Cruz at the NorCal Tournament, has a 3.78 GAA and is averaging 8.88 saves per game.
