Beach Falls To 0-4 In MPSF With Loss October 20, 2002 STOCKTON, Calif. — The Pacific Tigers men's water polo team came through in the clutch as the Tigers defeated Long Beach State 10-9 in overtime on Sunday. With the win Pacific improved to 8-9 on the season and 3-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the 49ers fell to 10-12 on the season and 0-4 in the MPSF.
Pacific never trailed in the contest, but there were six ties, including at the end of the third period, fourth period and the first overtime period. In the second overtime, Pacific junior Jarrod Cruzat scored his second goal on a 1-up situation for Pacific with 1:28 remaining in the match for the winning goal. Long Beach had two opportunities to tie the game, but were unable to get a shot off as the Tiger senior Danny Johnson stole the first possession and an offense foul cost Long Beach its final possession. Earlier in the match Pacific looked like it would break away as the Tiger built a 5-2 lead after two periods behind two goals from Johnson. The 49ers, however, answered in the third period with three consecutive goals to tie the match at 5-5. In the fourth period Pacific senior Sasha Maese scored on the first possession to put the Tigers back in front 6-5. On the ensuing possession, Long Beach's Nathan Allard knotted the game 6-6 as he lofted a shot over the head of Tiger goalie Laurie Trettel. Maese tossed in his second goal of the period with 4:12 remaining, but again Long Beach answered with a goal from Kellyn Carlson at the 1:27 mark. With 45 seconds remaining in the period, Pacific took their fifth lead of the match on Cruzat's first goal, also in a 1-up situation. Then with 23 seconds remaining Long Beach's Erik Geoffroy found the back of the net on another loft over the head of Trettel to send the match to overtime. The two teams traded goals on the second possession by each team in the first overtime to set the stage for Cruzat's game winning goal.
For the 49ers, Carlson led the way with three goals while Geoffory added two.
