FULLERTON, CA-- Sophomore Laura Thomas (London, England) won both of her singles matches on Saturday and advanced to the semifinals at the CS Fullerton Fall Intercollegiates on the campus of Cal State Fullerton. Thomas is the lone 49er left in singles after Lindsey Marvel (Oklahoma City, OK) fell in the championship quarterfinals.
Thomas began the day with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the third round over Patrycia Hubl of Loyola Marymount. In the quarterfinals, she downed Michelle Beyronneau of UC Riverside, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Thomas will now face the #1 seed, Uzma Kahn of UCSB in the semifinals on Sunday at 9 am.
Marvel won her third round match, defeating Brittany Bierman of CS Northridge, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, Marvel fell to Kahn, 6-2, 6-3. Two other 49ers fell in the third round on Saturday. Claudia Argumedo (San Salvador, El Salvador) lost to Ann Claire Ortiz-Luis of Cal Poly Pomona, 6-2, 7-6 (3) and Kelly Chan (Kailua-Kona, HI) lost to Danielle Hustedt of Cal Poly SLO, 6-2, 6-1.
In consolation doubles, Marvel/Argumedo led 3-0 over Murggraf/Jex of Cal Poly Pomona, but had to retire due to a foot injury for Argumedo. The team of Chan/Thomas won their first consolation match, defeating Holmberg/DeVera of Cal Poly Pomona, 8-3, but then fell in the second round to Khan/Maddocks of UCSB, 9-7.
Singles semifinal action begins at 9:00 am on Sunday at Fullerton's campus courts.
