Azevedo's 4 Goals Leads Cardinal To Victory October 19, 2002 STANFORD, CA-- Tony Azevedo scored four goals and Mike Derse three to lead the #1-ranked Stanford Cardinal to a 14-6 victory over #9-Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon in an MPSF men's water polo game at the Avery Aquatic Center. Stanford improves to 15-2 overall and 3-1 in the MPSF, while The Beach falls to 10-11 and 0-3 in league action.
Stanford got on the scoreboard first as Derse scored the first of his three goals just one minute into the contest. Aaron Holloway then scored two quick goals to give the 49ers a 2-1 lead. With the game tied 2-2, Kelly Carlson scored the first of his two goals to give LBSU a 3-2 lead. But, from there on out it was all Stanford. The Cardinal scored three straight goals to close out the quarter and take a 5-3 lead.
Azevedo scored two of his four goals in the second quarter, spurring the Cardinal to a 9-5 halftime advantage. Stanford put the game away with four goals in the third.
Holloway and Carlson both tallied two goals for The Beach, while David Del Grande and Nathan Allard scored one apiece.
Stanford's Nick Ellis finished the day with eight goalie saves. Michael Konstas started in goal for the 49ers and had two saves in the first half. Redshirt freshman Thomas Onyshko played in the second half and recorded five saves.
The 49ers conclude their trip to Northern California when they play at Pacific on Sunday at 12 pm in Stockton in a MPSF contest.
