FULLERTON, CA--The Long Beach State women's tennis team advanced four singles players to Saturday's Round of 16 at the 2002 CS Fullerton Fall Intercollegiates. Winning two matches on Friday in singles were Lindsey Marvel, Laura Thomas, Claudia Argumedo and Kelly Chan. Freshman Megan Biorkman was scheduled to play singles and doubles, but had to default due to illness.
Argumedo (San Salvador, El Salvador) won her two matches, defeating UCSB's Ashley Maddocks 6-3, 6-4 and CS Fullerton's Ashley Dunbar, 6-0, 6-1. Marvel (Oklahoma City, OK) earned victories over Jessica Nesamony of UCI, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 and Vanessa Kawasaki of Southern Utah, 6-0, 6-0. Thomas (London, England) defeated Yuyu Myinttun of CS Northridge, 6-0, 6-1 and then downed Andrea Pintar of UCSB, 6-2, 6-1 in the second round. Chan (Kailua-Kona, HI) won both of her matches as well, but needed three sets to do so. In the first round she defeated Veronica Fermin of UCI, 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 and in the second round she ousted CS Fullerton's Carla Rocha, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles, the 49er duo of Marvel/Argumedo won their first matcs, defeating Galido/Thompson of Cal Poly, 8-1, but then fell to Cross/Beyronneau of cal Poly, 8-6, in the second round. Thomas/Chan lost opening match, 8-2, to Waller/Billingsly of Cal Poly and will play on Saturday in the consolation bracket.
Singles action begins at 9:00 am on Saturday at Fullerton's campus courts.
