Geoffory Scores 3 Goals For The Beach October 13, 2002
LONG BEACH, CA-- Doug Arthur scored four goals and Anthony Borasi three to lead the UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team to a 9-7 non-league victory over Long Beach State on Sunday afternoon at the Campus Pool. The Gauchos (5-9), who trailed 2-0 early on, went on an 8-2 run over the next two quarters and held on down the stretch to record the victory over the 49ers (9-10) while snapping a six-game losing skid to The Beach.
It looked good early on for the 49ers as Erik Gorffroy scored at 6:39 and David Del Grande at 5:39, giving the 49ers a quick 2-0 lead. UCSB would then dominate play for the next two and one-half quarters of action. Steven Traverso put UCSB on the scoreboard at 5:07 in the first quarter and Borasi tied the game at 2-2 at 1:25. With the score tied at 3-3 in the second quarter, UCSB then scored five of the next six goals in the game, including Borasi's third at 1:29 in the third, giving UCSB an 8-4 advantage.
The 49eres fought back and pulled to within 8-7 as Geoffroy scored his third goal of the game at the 4:37 mark in the fourth quarter, but the 49ers were not able to score the rest of the way.
UCSB goalie Sherwin Kim recorded five goalie saves, while his counterpart, Michael Konstas had six. The 49ers had 26 shots in the game, but many were off target, sailing wide or hitting the crossbar. The Gauchos had just 18 shots and scored on nine of those.
Geoffroy had another strong outing for the 49ers with three goals, senior Aaron Holloway added two and Del Grande and Nathan Allard tallied one goal each.
The 49ers hit the road next weekend when they play at UC Santa Cruz (Oct. 18), at Stanford (Oct. 19) and at Pacific (Oct. 20).
