Anastasia Dvornikova Advances to Semifinals in Singles/Championship in Doubles September 29, 2001 FRESNO, CA--Long Beach State sophomore Anastasia Dvornikova (Moscow, Russia) advanced to the semifinals in singles in the 2001 Wathen-Hancock Bulldog Classic with two victories on Saturday. Dvornikova then teamed with doubles partner Lindsey Marvel (Oklahoma City, OK) to win two matches and advance to the doubles championship match.
Dvornikova, the #4-seed in the tournament draw, easily won her third round match against Suzanne Bertel of Pacific, 6-0, 6-0 on Saturday morning. In the quarterfinals, Dvornikova sailed past Vania Apodaca of Nevada, 6-3, 6-1. Dvornikova will now play the #1-seed in the singles draw, Raquel Kops-Jones of California at 8:30 am Sunday morning. Kops-Jones won her quarterfinal match over Chantel Wiggins of Fresno State due to injury. The other singles semifinal will pit #2-seed Christina Fusano of California against #3-seed Chloe Carlotti of Fresno State. Marvel was able to advance to the quarterfinal round in singles as she defeated Petra Abraham of Sacramento State in the Round of 16, 6-1, 6-2. Marvel then fell to Fusano, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
In doubles, Dvornikova and Marvel got a win in the quarterfinals by default over Katharina Heil/Melinda Kocsis of Pacific. In the semifinals, the duo slipped past Vania Apodaca/Kodee Domingo of Nevada, 8-6. Dvornikova and Marvel will meet the top-seeded team of Fasano and Nicole Havlicek of California for the title on Sunday afternoon.
The only other 49er in action on Saturday was Alena Dvornikova (Moscow, Russia) who fell in the third round of singles to Wiggins of Fresno State, 6-3, 6-2.
