Three 49ers Advance To The Round of 16 In Singles Action September 28, 2001 FRESNO, CA--Long Beach State got off to a strong start in the first day of the Wathen-Hancock Bulldog Classic on Friday in Fresno, CA. Three 49er players advanced to the Round of 16 with first and/or second round victories. Sisters Alena and Anastasia Dvornikova (Moscow, Russia) both advanced, as did sophomore transfer Lindsey Marvel (Oklahoma City, OK). In doubles, the team of Anastasia Dvornikova and Lindsey Marvel advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Ashley Campbell and Jenny Siegel of Santa Clara, 8-3
Anastasia Dvornikova, the #4 seed in the draw, received a first round bye and then routed Amanda Sanches of Sacramento State in the second round, 6-0, 6-1. Dvornikova will face Susanne Bertel of Pacific in the Round of 16 at 8:00 am Saturday. Alena Dvornikova needed three sets to win both of her matches today. She knocked off Ann Bihler of Nevada, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the first round and then ousted Roberta Fessenko of Sacramento State, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Marvel, who transferred to the 49ers from the University of New Mexico, defeated Jenny Siegel of Santa Clara in the opening round, 6-1, 6-4 and then downed Ann Lukner of San Jose State, 7-6 (4), 6-0. Laura Thomas and Cheryl Kindred, who both won their opening round matches, fell in the second round to seeded opponents. Thomas fell to #1-seed Raquel Kops-Jones of California, 6-3, 6-3, while Kindred fell to the #3-seeded Chloe Carlotti of Fresno State, 6-2, 6-2.
The doubles team of Kelly Chan and Laura Thomas lost in the Round of 16 to Vania Apodaca/Kodee Domingo of Nevada, 8-6, and Alena Dvornikova and Cheryl Kindred fell in the Round of 16 to Marta Gronowicz/Gabriella Lundquist of Sacramento State, 9-8.
