Beach Downs Pacific, 13-6 September 28, 2001 LONG BEACH, CA--Ten different players scored to lead the Long Beach State men's water polo team to its first win of the season, a 13-6 triumph over the University of the Pacific on Friday afternoon at the 49er Campus Pool. Aaron Holloway (El Segundo), Nathan Allard (La Habra) and Justin Jewell (Ojai) all scored two goals apiece for the 49ers, who improved to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). Pacific fell to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the MPSF.
Long Beach jumped on the Tigers early, scoring the first three goals of the game. Senior Tyler Wawrzynski (Garden Grove) got Long Beach on the board at the 6:13 mark of the first quarter with his first goal of the season. Allard scored his first goal at the 3:23 mark and then gave the 49ers a 4-1 advantage at the end of the quarter with his second goal of the game with just 0:10 left on the clock. Long Beach built up a 7-1 lead early in the second quarter on consecutive goals by Kellyn Carlson (Tacoma, WA), Chris Segesman (Goleta) and Pat Logan (Santa Ana). Pacific, which was led by Brady Norvalls three goals, scored three times in the final three minutes of the half to cut the lead to 9-4 at halftime.
The game was extremely physical as both teams had players having to leave the contest due to injury. The 49ers Jewel left the game in the fourth quarter, while UOPs Kraig Jorgensen had to leave the pool midway through the third quarter.
In my opinion, commented 49er head coach Rick Azevedo, the game got out of control. We stopped playing offense at the beginning of the third period. We slowed the game down from there. I was very proud of the way our guys handled the flow of the game and how physical it was out there. It was a situation where Pacific came in and played with a lot of heart. They played a physical game. It was very rough out there.
Forty-Niner goalie Brett Adolph recorded eight goalie saves for the afternoon in his second start of the year. The 49ers will next be in action on October 13-14 when they travel to Northern California to participate in the NorCal Tournament, held at Stanford University. .
