The Record: Long Beach State concluded the 2001 season with a 22-3 overall record. The 22 victories was a new school record, breaking the old mark of 20. LBSU also won a school-record 17 consecutive matches during the campaign. The 49ers were the #1 seed at the 2001 Big West Conference Tournament, but fell in the tournament finals to Boise State, 4-3.

The Coach: Head Coach Jenny Hilt (UCLA, 1994) is 47-45 (.511) heading into her 5th year in charge of the 49er program. She was selected as the 2001 Big West Conference Coach of the Year.

2001 Fall Season: The 49ers open up the 2001-02 campaign at the Wathen-Hancock Bulldog Classic. The 49ers will take seven players to Fresno this weekend for their initial competition. In singles, Anastasia Dvornikova received the fourth seed and will get a first round bye. Other singles participants are returnees Alena Dvornikova, Christina Son, Kelly Chan, Cheryl Kindred and newcomers Lindsey Marvel and Laura Thomas. 49er doubles teams entered are Alena Dvornikova and Cheryl Kindred, Anastasia Dvornikova and Lindsey Marvel and Kelly Chan and Laura Thomas. The tournament begins at 8:00 am on Friday and continues through Sunday. The singles tournament will have a consolation bracket, while the doubles will be single elimination.

Double Your Pleasure: Sisters Anastasia and Alena Dvornikova (Moscow, Russia) are back for their sophomore seasons at Long Beach State. Anastasia, the 2001 Big West Player of the Year, earned first team all-league honors in both singles and doubles last year. She is ranked #94 in the country in the ITA Pre-Season Rankings after compiling a 21-3 singles and 22-3 doubles mark last season. Alena, was named second team in singles and first team in doubles after posting a 19-5 singles and 22-3 doubles mark.

Two Newcomers: Two newcomers dot the 49er roster this fall in Laura Thomas and Lindsey Marvel. Thomas is a freshman out of London, England where she played tennis and field hockey at Bullers Wood School. Marvel, who hails from Oklahoma City, OK, is a sophomore transfer from the University of New Mexico. Marvel was 17-10 last year at UNM in singles, playing at either the #4 or #5 spot. In doubles she accumulated an 18-13 mark. In January, Claudia Argumedo will join the 49er squad. Argumedo hails from El Salvador and holds a #3 ranking in her country.
