Beach Falls To 0-2 On Young Season September 21, 2001 Long Beach, CA--Freshman Brett Ormsby (El Cajon) scored three goals, including the eventual game-winner, to send the #3-ranked UCLA Bruins to an 8-6 victory over #6 Long Beach State on Friday afternoon at the 49er Campus Pool. The Bruins improve to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) with the victory, while The Beach falls to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The Bruins put the game away with a four-goal explosion in the third quarter. After Nathan Allard (La Habra) gave the 49ers their first lead of the game, 5-4, with a goal at the 3:17 mark, UCLA charged back to score four consecutive goals and grab an 8-5 advantage after three periods. Matt Flesher (Diamond Bar) scored at the 3:00 mark to tie the contest at 5-5, Alfonso Tucay (Burbank) scored at 2:19 and Ormsbys netted his third goal of the game at the 1:20 mark to give UCLA a 7-5 lead. Ted Peck (Irvine) then tallied just before the end of the period (0:08), giving the Bruins an 8-5 lead.
We earned 10 ejections, commented 49er head coach Rick Azevedo. We were 4 for 10 in ejections. If we would have been able to put away our ejections at a higher percentage, we win this game. You must execute your opportunities. We fought hard though. When we led 5-4 we should have buckled up on defense. They got a couple of easy goals and we got rattled a little bit. I thought we recomposed ourselves though and made a nice comeback at the end.
Trailing 3-1 midway through the second quarter, the 49er offense got on track. Back-to-back goals by Justin Jewell (Ojai) at 3:27 and Aaron Holloway (El Segundo) at 2:29 tied the game at 3-3. UCLA tallied at the 0:57 mark on the first of two goals by Flesher to lead 4-3, but The Beach rebounded to score with just 0:18 left on the clock as Long Beach native Scott Miller found the net to send the two teams into the lockerroom tied at the half, 4-4.
Both goalies had outstanding games. Junior Brandon Brooks (Honolulu, HI) recorded 14 goalie saves on the afternoon, while 49er goalie Michael Konstas (Athens, Greece) recorded 10 saves, seven in the first half.
The 49ers will next be in action on Friday, September 28 as they host Pacific at 4:00 pm at the 49er Campus Pool in their home opener.
