| | 49ers Close Out Regular Season Schedule | November 5, 2001 The Records: The Long Beach State mens water polo team will close out its 2001 regular season with three games this week. The 49ers, 9-6 overall and 2-4 in the MPSF, play at UC Irvine on Tuesday, at LMU on Thursday and host UCSB on Saturday afternoon at 12 pm. The Coach: Rick Azevedo is in his third season as the head man for the 49er men's water polo squad. Azevedo is 37-33 (.529) in his third year at Long Beach State. Beach Downs Banana Slugs: Chris Segesman scored 5 goals while Nathan Allard, Andrew Ruga and Kellyn Carlson all tallied two goals in leading the 49ers to a 15-4 win. Eight different players scored and goalie Brett Adolph tallied 7 saves. Beach Bounces Bears: Justin Jewell and Nathan Allard each scored two goals to lead the 49ers to a 7-5 win at Cal on Saturday morning. The win was just the sixth-ever by LBSU over Cal and the first-ever regular season conference win by a 49er squad at Cal. Brett Adolph had 11 goalies saves in the game. Chris Segesman, Scott Miller and Brett Adams scored the other 49er goals over the #5-ranked Golden Bears. Adolph Moves Up Chart: Goalie Brett Adolph (La Mesa) has recorded 97 goalie saves this season, which is tied for the 20th-best single season mark in LBSU history. With an 8.43 save average this season, Adolph has recorded 281 career saves to rank #8 all-time. Next in line for Adolph to pass is Robert Smith (1999-00) who tallied 359 career goalie saves. Segesman Scores 6 Times: Senior Chris Segesman (Goleta) scored 6 goals in the two victories this past weekend, giving him a team-leading 30 goals. Segesman scored 5 times in the 15-4 win at UC Santa Cruz and tallied one goal in the win at Cal. The 5 goals ties his season-high which he tallied in the 49ers 12-11 sudden-death victory at UC San Diego. Segesman has scored 22 goals in the past 7 games and has accumulated 158 career goals, placing him 6th on the 49er career goals scored chart. Offense Churning Up Big Numbers: The 49er offense has been in high gear the past three weeks, having tallied double-digits in goals in 5 of their last 7 outings. In the first 8 games of the season the 49ers were averaging 9.125 goals per game. In the last 7 games, that number has jumped to 11.57. On October 15, the 49ers routed Chaminade 19-5. The 19 goals tied for the ninth-best single game mark in history. Defense Keys Win Streak: The 49ers have won three consecutive games and the defense has been outstanding. During the 3-game winning streak the 49ers are outscoring their opponents 32-14, allowing just 4.67 goals per game. Goalie Brett Adolph has been in the cage all three games and has lowered his GAA to 8.17. Home Finale: Saturday the 49ers will host UC Santa Barbara in the final home game of the season.
