The past couple of weeks the guys have been playing together, said 49er head coach Rick Azevedo. This was a total team win with total team unity. The whole year we basically have been challenging everything. We easily could be 14-1 at this point. But, the past couple of weeks weve been playing great water polo. Brett Adolph had a great game for us in goal as well.
Both teams scored once in the fourth quarter with Long Beach scoring first at 5:20 as Scott Miller (Long Beach) found the back of the net. Cal was able to score at the 4:34 mark on a goal by Mike West, but were shutout the remainder of the contest. 49er goalie Brett Adolph (La Mesa) tallied 10 goalie saves on the morning. Cal recorded 24 shots on the day to just 15 for the 49ers, but Long Beach found the net seven times.
The win over the Golden Bears was just the sixth-ever by a Long Beach State mens water polo squad, who trailed in the all-time series by a 56-5 count heading into the day. Cal had won the past six meetings and 28 of the last 29.
The 49ers will next be in action on Tuesday, November 6 when they play at UC Irvine at 7:00 pm.
