Woodland, CA--The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) announced it's All-MPSF men's water polo teams and the 2001 Player and Coach of the Year awards on Wednesday. Five Long Beach State men's water polo players earned all-conference accolades, the most for a 49er squad since the 1970 campaign. Senior Chris Segesman was named first team All-MPSF and senior Justin Jewell earned third team honors. Named honorable mention were senior Scott Miller, junior Aaron Holloway and sophomore Nathan Allard. Stanford freshman Tony Azevedo was named the MPSF Player of the Year, while Cardinal coach Dante Dettamanti earned Coach of the Year accolades.
Segesman picked up his third first team All-MPSF honor after leading the 49ers in scoring with 37 goals. Segesman, who was named to the MSPF Chamionships All-Tournament Team, keyed a second half run which saw LBSU win seven of its final nine games and finish in fourth place at the MPSF Championships. Jewell, a four-year letterwinner, finished third on the squad with 22 goals this year.
Miller, a native of Long Beach, tallied 20 goals in 2001, fourth-best on the team. Allard earned honorable mention kudos due to his strong 2-meter play. Allard scored 18 goals, fifth-best on the team. Holloway, who trained with the U.S. National Team last summer, finished second on the team with 32 goals.
