49ers Slip Past #3-Ranked Pepperdine November 23, 2001 BERKELEY, CA--Aaron Holloway (El Segundo), Nathan Allard (La Habra) and Scott Miller (Long Beach) each scored two goals to the the #6-ranked Long Beach State men's water polo team to an 8-6 win over #3-ranked Pepperdine on Saturday monring in the first round of the 2001 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Tournament in Berkeley, CA. The 49ers were the tournaments #5 seed while the Waves were seeded #4. With the win, the seventh in a row for the 13-6 49ers, The Beach moves to Saturday's semifinals where they will take on the winner of Friday's late game between Stanford and UC Irvine, at 2:00 pm. Pepperdine falls to 13-5.
The 49ers took control of the game in the second quarter, by outscoring the Waves 3-1, breaking a 2-2 first quarter tie. Pepperdine pulled to within one at 6-5 after three quarters, but two fourth quarters goals sealed the 8-6 win for LBSU. Long Beach goalie Brett Adolph finished the day with 7 goalie saves.
Long Beach State moves to the championship semifinals of the MPSF Tournament for the first time in school history. The MPSF Tournament began in 1993. In the previous eight MPSF Tournaments the 49ers accumulated an 8-19 record. Last year the 49ers lost to California in the first round and Stanford in the conolation semifinals, before defeating Pacific, 12-6, for 7th place. From 1984 to 1992 there was no league tournament as teams for the NCAA Championships were selected on an at-large basis and according to final regular league standings. From 1975 to 1983 the PCAA Tournament determined who received the automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
