| | 49ers Idle Until MPSF Tournament | November 12, 2001 The Record: The Long Beach State men's water polo team concluded its regular season at 12-6 overall and finished 4-4 in the MPSF. The 49ers have won six consecutive games heading into the MPSF Tournament. The 49ers first round opponent at the MPSF Tournament will be the Pepperdine Waves. The Coach: Rick Azevedo is in his third season as the head man for the 49er men's water polo squad. Azevedo is 40-33 (.548) in his third year at Long Beach State. Beach Defeats UC Irvine: The 49ers jumped to a 3-1 halftime lead and then held on for an exicting 6-4 win at UCI on Tuesday night. Six different 49ers tallied goals and goalie Brett Adolph recorded 10 goalie saves. LMU Falls To 49ers: Chris Segesman tallied three goals and Aaron Holloway and Justin Jewell one each as the 49ers came away with a 5-2 win at LMU. The Lions led 2-1 at the half, but the 49ers outscored LMU 4-0 in the second half to win going away. Brett Adolph recorded 11 goalie saves while allowing a season-low two goals. LBSU Slips Past Gauchos: Eight different 49ers scored goals, including 2 each by Chris Segesman, Aaron Holloway, Tyler Wawrzynski, Kellyn Carlson and Max Aguilar, as LBSU defeated UCSB, 13-8. Trailing 4-3, the 49ers went on a 7-0 run through periods two and three to seal the victory. Brett Adolph finished with 7 goalie saves. Segesman Leads Beach In Scoring: Senior Chris Segesman (Goleta) has been playing All-America-calibre water polo for the 49ers, especially in the scoring department the past month. Segesman leads the 49ers in scoring with 36 goals. In his last 10 games he has scored 28 goals, including 5 goals in wins over UC Santa Cruz and UC San Diego. A first team All-American last year, Segesman is fourth on the 49er career scoring chart with 164 career goals. Adolph Moves Up Chart: Goalie Brett Adolph (La Mesa) has recorded 125 goalie saves this season, which is the 16th-best single season mark in LBSU history. With an 8.62 save average this season, Adolph has recorded 309 career saves to rank #8 all-time. Next in line for Adolph to pass is Robert Smith (1999-00) who tallied 359 career goalie saves. Defense Keys Win Streak: The 49ers have won six consecutive games and the defense has been outstanding. During the 6-game winning streak the 49ers are outscoring their opponents 56-28, allowing just 4.67 goals per game. Goalie Brett Adolph has been in the cage all five games and has lowered his GAA to 7.45. MPSF Tournament: The 49ers will have a little break in their schedule before the MPSF Tournament. LBSU begins play on Friday, Nov. 23 at the MPSF Championships which are being held at Cal-Berkeley.
