7-0 Run Leads To Victory In Final Home Contest November 10, 2001 LONG BEACH, CA--Eight different players scored in the final regular season game for the Long Beach State mens water polo team, as The Beach prevailed over UC Santa Barbara 13-8 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) contest at the 49er Campus Pool. The 49ers, ranked #5 in the country, are riding a six-game winning streak and are now 12-6 overall and finished 4-4 in the MPSF. UCSB, ranked #10, is 7-10 and 2-6 in league play.
The 49ers put the game away with a 7-0 run over the second and third quarters. Trailing 4-3, Long Beach tied the contest at 4-4 at the 2:19 mark on senior Chris Segesmans first goal of the game. The 49ers got goals from Kelly Carlson (1:15) and Max Aguilar (0:22) to close out the half with LBSU leading 6-4. The 49ers then scored the first four goals of the third quarter to take a commanding 10-4 lead. Carlson's second goal of the day, at the 1:17 mark in the third quarter, capped the 49ers 7-0 run. In the key run, both Segesman and Carlson tallied two goals apiece.
Segesman, Carlson, Aguilar, Tyler Wawrzynski, and Aaron Holloway all accounted for two goals apiece, while Nathan Allard, Scott Miller and Andrew Ruga each scored once. Joey Pacelli led UCSB with three goals. 49er goalie Brett Adolph finished with 7 saves on the day, 5 in the second half. UCSB goalie Trevor Spence had 6 saves.
UCSB held its own in the first quarter leading by scores of 2-1 and 3-2 before ending the period tied at 3-3. Mark Welch got the gauchos on the scoreboard at the 4:37 mark and Anthony Borasi gave UCSB its first lead of the day with a goal at the 3:40 mark. Pacellis first goal came on a three-meter shot at 1:47, giving UCSB a 3-2 lead.
Todays game was the final home game for seven 49er seniors: Brett Adams (Wellington, new Zealand), Brett Adolph (La Mesa), Justin Jewell (Ojai), Scott Miller (Long Beach), Andrew Ruga (Fullerton), Chris Segesman (Goleta) and Tyler Wawrzynski (Garden Grove).
The 49ers next will be in action on November 23-25 at the MPSF Championships in Berkeley, California. The 49ers should be the #5 seed in the 9-team tournament.
