| | Long Beach Heads To Northern California | October 8, 2001 The Records: The 49ers improved to 2-2 overall with a 13-6 win on Saturday at Cal Baptist. This weekend the 49ers head north to compete in the NorCal Tournament, hosted by Stanford. Long Beach will tangle with Pacific in its first game at 12 pm on Saturday. If the 49ers win they play the winner of UCLA/Air Force at 4:20 pm. If they lose, the play the loser between UCLA/Air Force at 5:30 pm. The Coach: Rick Azevedo is in his third season as the head man for the 49er men's water polo squad. Azevedo is 30-29 (.508) in his third year at Long Beach State. Beach Tops Lancers: The 49ers had 9 different players score against Cal Baptist on Saturday, with senior Scott Miller leading the way with three goals. Nathan Allard and Max Aguilar both tallied two goals. Segesman In 8th Place: Senior Chris Segesman (Goleta, CA) has scored four goals this year and has 132 career goals, placing him 8th place all-time on the 49er career goals chart. Next in line for Segesman is Scott Weir, who tallied 142 goals. Miller Ties Career-High: Senior Scott Miller (Long Beach) scored three goals at Cal Baptist, tying his previous 49er career-high. Last season Miller tallied three goals in a win against UCSB. With six goals on the season, Miller is tied with Nathan Allard as Long Beach's leading scorer. Miller recorded 33 goals last season and had 10 multiple-goal games. This season he has two multiple-goal games as he tallied two goals in the loss to UCLA earlier this season. Aguilar & Voutsinos See Action: Juniors Max Aguilar (Mexico City, Mexico) and Lorenzo Voutsinos (Athens, Greece) both saw their first action of the season on Saturday at Cal Baptist. Aguilar, who transferred to LBSU from West Valley JC, scored two goals in his initial 49er competition. Voutsinos, who attended Golden West JC, scored one goal on Saturday. This Years NorCal: There will be 15 teams competing at the NorCal Tournament this weekend. All nine MPSF teams will be joined by UC San Diego, Santa Clara, UC Davis, LMU, Air Force and Cal Baptist. In Group A is Stanford, UC Irvine, UCSD, Santa Clara; Group B is USC, UCSB, LMU and UC Davis; Group C is UCLA, Long Beach State, Pacific and Air Force and Group D has Pepperdine, California and Cal Baptist. Each team is guaranteed four games over the two days. Last Year At NorCal: Last year the 49ers went 2-2 at the NorCal Tournament. The Beach won its opening game, 9-7, vs. UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, but then fell to USC, 9-5. On Sunday, the 49ers lost to UC Irvine, 6-5 in overtime, and then defeated UC San Diego, 5-2. Chris Segesman scored 9 goals in the tournament, including 4 vs. UCSB. Konstas In Goal: Redshirt freshman Michael Konstas (Athens, Greece) started in goal on Saturday at Cal Baptist, his second start of the season. Konstas recorded 9 goalie saves in the 13-6 victory. In two games this season, Konstas is averaging 9.5 saves per game and has allowed 7.0 goals per outing. Schedule Addition: The 49ers will play at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, October 28 at 1 pm. |
