Waves Outsocre 49ers 4-1 In Overtime October 21, 2001 MALIBU, CA--Freshman utilityman Jesse Smith scored 6 goals to lead #3-ranked Pepperdine (10-2/3-1) to a 15-12 overtime victory over the #6-ranked Long Beach State (6-6/1-4) 49ers on Sunday afternoon in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) game at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool in Malibu.
The game featured 9 ties and 5 lead changes as the Waves won their third straight overtime game.
The offensive fireworks began at the start of the fourth quarter. With the game tied at 6-6, both teams scored 5 goals in the quarter to send the contest into overtime. Pepperdine took an 11-10 lead on a lob shot by Scott Harvey with 1:50 to play in the fourth quarter, but the 49ers knotted the contest at the 0:53 mark on Chris Segesman's fourth goal of the afternoon.
In overtime, Smith scored at the 2:33 mark in the first overtime to give Pepperdine a brief 12-11 advantage, but the 49ers Justin Jewell scored just 26 seconds later to tie the game. That 12-12 tie would be the final tie of the afternoon.
Pepperdine took the lead for good at the 1:28 mark in the first overtime, when Karl Niehaus scored his second goal of the game. Harvey then tallied his third goal just before the end of the period, giving the Waves a 14-12 advantage. In the second overtime period the 49ers failed to score while the Waves tallied one last goal.
Complimenting Segesman's 4 goals was Jewell, who tallied 3 scores and David Del Grande who added 2. 49er goalie Brett Adolph recorded 8 goalie saves while the Waves goalie, Michael Soltis, had 10 saves.
