Cory Loebl enters his 20th season as an assistant coach at Long Beach State, where he has built one of the most successful and consistent throws programs on the West Coast. During his tenure, Loebl has guided 12 athletes to the NCAA Championships, sent 75 qualifiers to the NCAA West Regionals, and coached throwers to 33 conference titles and eight All-America honors.

Under Loebl’s leadership, the Beach holds both the men’s and women’s indoor weight throw school records along with five outdoor program records. Since his arrival, Long Beach State has consistently led the Big West in individual titles and podium finishes in the throwing events.

Recent years have continued that tradition of excellence. In 2025, five athletes advanced to the NCAA West Regional, highlighted by Canaan Wharry’s Big West title in the discus. The 2024 campaign saw Rori Denness-Lamont break the school record in the javelin, win the Big West title, advance to NCAA West Regionals, and compete at the Canadian Olympic Trials. Six Beach throwers qualified for the regional meet that year. In 2023, Sebastian Coleman was named Big West Field Athlete of the Year and Field Athlete of the Meet after sweeping the discus and hammer; he went on to NCAA West Regional qualification in both events and claimed the MPSF weight throw title indoors.

The 2022 season featured another dominant showing as the men’s throws group captured three of four Big West titles and produced four NCAA West Prelim qualifiers. Charlie Vernoy climbed into the program’s all-time top 10 lists in the weight throw, shot put, and hammer while winning the conference discus crown. The Beach swept the podium in the men’s hammer and went one-two in both discus and javelin.

Loebl’s coaching success has extended to mentoring alumni at the post-collegiate level, most notably Colin Dunbar, a two-time All-American and 2011 NCAA West Regional Field Athlete of the Year. Dunbar went on to earn international medals, including silver in the hammer at the 2015 NACAC Senior Area Championships, and multiple top finishes at USA Championships.

As a student-athlete at Long Beach State (2002–03), Loebl was one of the program’s most decorated throwers. A three-time NCAA qualifier and four-time All-Big West performer, he competed in the javelin, discus, hammer, and shot put. In 2003, he was named Big West Male Athlete of the Year after scoring a school-record 30 points at the conference championships, winning the discus and earning all-league honors in three events. Over two years, he amassed 44 points at the Big West meet—one of the highest totals in program history. Loebl graduated ranked among the top 10 in six events, including No. 2 all-time in the indoor shot put and weight throw.

In addition to his athletic success, Loebl excelled academically. He was named Long Beach State’s Big West Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2004, earned multiple all-academic honors, and was a two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic selection. Before his career at The Beach, he was a two-time NWAACC champion in the discus and hammer at Clackamas Community College (Ore.).

Loebl earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Long Beach State and a master’s in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University Irvine. He currently teaches at Carmenita Middle School in Cerritos while continuing to lead one of the Big West’s premier throws programs.
