Gregory Leads Decathlon After Day One At Big West Multis Championships

Ryan Gregory leads decathlon standings after dominant opening day at Big West Championships.
IRVINE, Calif. -- Senior Ryan Gregory sits atop the men's decathlon standings after day one of the Big West Conference Multis Championships Friday at Anteater Stadium, while Milo Orona closed the day in fourth place for Long Beach State.

Gregory won four of the five events Friday and totaled 4,079 points to take the overall lead heading into the final day of competition. Orona added 3,563 points through five events to place fourth overall.

Gregory opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 100 meters, running 10.81 to earn 903 points. Orona followed with a fourth-place finish in 11.39 for 776 points.

In the long jump, Gregory posted a personal-record mark of 7.32m (24 feet, ¼ inch) to win the event and add 891 points. Orona finished third with a mark of 6.83m (22-5), earning 774 points.

The pair continued to score points in the shot put as Gregory placed third with a personal-record throw of 12.56m (41-2 ½) for 640 points, while Orona took fourth with a mark of 12.41m (40-8 ¾) for 631 points.

Gregory added another event victory in the high jump after clearing 2.00m (6-6 ¾), collecting 803 points. Orona finished fourth with a clearance of 1.94m (6-4 ¼), earning 749 points.

Gregory closed the day with another first-place finish in the 400 meters, running 49.41. Orona placed fifth in the event with a time of 54.17.

The decathlon resumes Saturday at 12 p.m. with the 110-meter hurdles. The remaining events include the discus, pole vault and javelin before concluding with the 1,500 meters.
