Long Beach State rallied late, but Oregon State held off the Dirtbags Friday night.
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State cut into an early deficit with a sixth-inning rally, but No. 10 Oregon State Beavers answered late to hand the Long Beach State Dirtbags a 7-2 loss Friday night at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
The Beavers struck first in the second inning after Ethan Porter opened the frame with a single to shallow right and Adam Haight followed with a base hit through the right side. Josh Proctor then lined a single through the left side to bring home Porter before Jacob Galloway added a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Haight for a 2-0 lead.
Oregon State added another run an inning later without recording a hit. AJ Singer worked a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball before Bryce Hubbard drew a walk. With two aboard, Porter reached on a throwing error that allowed Singer to score an unearned run and pushed the Beavers ahead 3-0.
The Beavers extended the lead again in the fifth after Easton Talt reached on a bunt single, and Singer followed with a single to center. Consecutive wild pitches moved both runners into scoring position before Talt crossed home on another wild pitch. Later in the inning, Paul Vazquez lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Singer and make it 5-0.
Long Beach State finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth. Conner Stewart opened the inning with a double to left before Damon Valdez singled to put runners on the corners. Camden Gasser followed with an RBI single to left, plating Stewart for the Dirtbags' first run of the night. After Smith Chandler worked a walk to load the bases, Trotter Enright singled through the left side to score Valdez and trim the deficit to 5-2.
The Dirtbags threatened for more, but Oregon State escaped the inning with a double play to keep the three-run advantage intact.
The Beavers responded immediately in the seventh. Vazquez singled through the left side and Porter walked before Proctor chopped an infield single to third, scoring Vazquez and extending the lead back to four runs.
Oregon State added its final run in the ninth after Hubbard singled and pinch runner Jace Miller moved into scoring position. Haight then drove a double into left center to score Miller for the 7-2 advantage.
Long Beach State collected seven hits in the loss led by Stewart, who had a double and a run scored while Valdez added a hit and an RBI. Gasser, Enright, and Dylan Lina also recorded a hit for the Dirtbags.
Ka'imi Kahalekai struck out two over 5.2 innings in the start before Caleb Anderson tossed 3.1 innings in relief, allowing two runs while striking out six.
The series continues Saturday at 6:05 p.m. at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field and will be streamed on ESPN+.
