Softball Drops Pair Against UC Davis After Marathon Extra Inning Loss
4/3/2026 11:32:00 PM | Softball
Long Beach State and UC Davis went 12 innings in the longest game for the Beach since 2022.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State and UC Davis went pitch-for-pitch in the opening game of the series, a 12-inning marathon that ultimately saw the Aggies come out on top. UC Davis then carried that momentum into game two, taking an early lead and pulling away from LBSU to win both games Friday to start the series.
The opening game of the series was the longest game for Long Beach State (21-15, 9-5 Big West) since 2022 in a 13-inning game that also came against UC Davis (19-17, 8-6 Big West).
Pitching played a key role in the contest, as Caroline Grimes went the distance for UC Davis, throwing all 12 innings for the Aggies and limiting Long Beach State to just four hits in the game. The Aggies took an early lead in the third inning, pushing across a run. Gia Felice started the frame with an infield single, and after moving to second on a groundout, the speedy senior scored on an infield single by Alyssa Dethlefson to open the scoring.
While Grimes was in command for the Aggies, Long Beach State's staff did well as well, limiting UC Davis to just that run for 11 innings between Isabella Alonso, Jailynn Banda, and Kate Barnett.
The Beach evened the score in the sixth, as freshman Elissa Guerero hit her second home run in a pinch-hit appearance, blasting a solo shot to tie the game at 1-1.
That would hold all the way through five more innings until Felice and Dethlefson combined again. With a runner on, a Felice single scored the go-ahead run, and then Dethlefson scored Felice with another single to give the Aggies a 3-1 lead in support of Grimes.
Carrying that momentum, the Aggies again took an early lead in game two. Felice reached on a dropped third strike, and then UC Davis would load the bases before a Kaylin Phillips walk brought home the first run of the game. Pricilla Ramirez was able to pick up two pop ups to end the inning and keep the score close.
The Aggies added a second run in the fourth with a solo home run from Rylee Reeves. Long Beach State battled back, pulling back a run as Audree Mendoza singled, was sacrificed over to second, and Brooklyn Lee brought home the sophomore with an RBI single to make the score 2-1 after four innings.
Long Beach State had lived dangerously, though, stranding eight UC Davis baserunners through four innings, and the Aggies finally made the Beach pay, scoring three runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh to pull away in the late innings to take the series.
The series will finish with one final game on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats will be available at beachlivestats.statbroadcast.com.
