Dirtbags rally late but strand runners in 7-2 loss at home.
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State fell 7-2 to UC Riverside at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field, as the Highlanders struck early and the Dirtbags were unable to overcome the deficit despite matching them with eight hits and drawing eight walks.
UC Riverside wasted no time in the first inning, loading the bases after a hit-by-pitch and a single put runners on first and third. A double down the left field line brought home the runner from third while moving the trailing runner to third, and a groundout plated another run from third. With a runner still at third, an RBI single to right-center added a third run, giving the Highlanders a 3-0 lead.
The Highlanders added on in the second, putting multiple runners aboard again. With the bases loaded a single up the middle drove in two runs, extending the lead to 5-0.
Long Beach State responded in the second by loading the bases. After Murchael Turner walked and Conner Stewart reached on a fielder's choice, back-to-back walks by Camden Gasser and Damon Valdez filled the bases. Trotter Enright then drew another walk, scoring Stewart from third to make it 5-1.
UC Riverside continued to build its lead in the fourth. A leadoff solo home run made it 6-1, and later in the inning, a runner advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a sacrifice fly to center, pushing the advantage to 7-1.
The Dirtbags added another run in the seventh. Taylor Tomlin led off with a single to shallow right, and Luke Taylor followed with a base hit through the left side to put runners on the corners. A walk to Kaiden Smaka then loaded the bases with no outs. Murchael Turner popped up to third for the first out. Conner Stewart followed with a groundout to second, allowing Tomlin to score from third while the other runners advanced, cutting the deficit to 7-2 before the inning ended.
Long Beach State threatened in the ninth, putting runners in scoring position, but were unable to bring them home as UC Riverside secured the win, 7-2.
Tomlin led the Dirtbags at the plate, going 3-for-3 in his appearances after entering as a substitute, while Turner added two hits and a walk, as both provided a spark in the lineup.
Long Beach State will return to Bohl Diamond at Blair Field for a midweek matchup Tuesday against Fresno State before continuing Big West play next weekend with a series against UC Davis on the road.
