Beach looks to stay unbeaten in conference play after 2-0 start
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- No. 51. Long Beach State continues Big West action this week with a road trip to Honolulu to face the University of Hawai'i. First serve is set for Saturday at 11 a.m. PT at the UH Tennis Complex as the Beach looks to remain unbeaten in conference play.
LBSU enters the match 5-5 overall and 2-0 in the Big West coming off of a competitive weekend at Rhodes Tennis Center. The Beach opened conference play with a 5-2 win over UC Riverside in late January and most recently, last weekend, a 4-3 victory over UC San Diego.
Sophomore Cecilia Costa has highlighted the Beach lineup recently after earning Big West Player of the Week honors. Competing at No. 2 singles, Costa posted a 2-0 record in singles with straight-set victories over UC San Diego and Sacramento State. She also went 2-0 in doubles alongside Paulina Franco Martinessi at the top flight, helping Long Beach State claim the doubles point in both matches. Costa's consistency has been instrumental in the Beach's strong start to conference play.
Depth throughout the singles lineup has been a key factor for LBSU. Against UC San Diego, the Beach received singles victories from Costa, Pamela Badillo and Paulina Franco Martinessi to secure the 4-3 win. The ability to close tight matches has defined Long Beach State's early Big West success.
Hawai'i presents a significant test at home, where travel and conditions can play a factor. The Rainbow Wahine will look to defend their home courts in a critical early-season conference matchup.
With momentum from a 2-0 start in league play and confidence from several tightly contested matches, Long Beach State aims to continue building consistency as conference competition intensifies.
