Cherrie Cox scored her first goal of the season to give the Beach a first half lead over the Longhorns.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State had a majority of the shots and possession in addition to a first-half lead against No. 19 Texas, but the Longhorns scored a pair of goals in the second half to take the win from the Beach on Sunday night at George Allen Field.
Long Beach State (1-1-0) had 10 shots in both halves and controlled the action early. Junior Cherrie Cox had an early opportunity, nodding the ball just over the crossbar in the eighth minute, and two minutes later a deflection from Natalie Arnold got past the Texas (1-1-0) keeper but hit the post to keep the score level.
The Beach held the Longhorns without a shot for over 20 minutes, with the first shot from Texas coming from long range and well off target in the 25th minute.
Long Beach State broke through in the 36th minute. Arnold forced a strong save from Mateya Dessieux, but Cox was ready for the rebound, putting the Beach in front 1-0, which held through the half.
Keeping the pressure on in the second half, Long Beach State had another strong chance as freshman Natelle El Mokbel's shot was cleared off the line in the opening minutes after the halftime break.
Aurora Schuck made a key save, one of her six on the night, by popping a header over the bar. Texas made the Beach pay with the ensuing corner, as Audrey Bryant scored off the entry from Olivia Ahem to tie the game in the 65th minute.
Long Beach State earned another solid opportunity, as a shot from Raddison Banks was saved by Dessieux and the header rebound from Cox was just over the bar. Texas then took the lead in the 81st minute, as Sadie Hoch scored to give the Longhorns the advantage.
With Long Beach State pressing forward, Schuck made another excellent save in the final minutes to deny the Longhorns on the counter, but Texas was able to close out the win in the end.
Long Beach State will play their first road games of the season starting next week, traveling to face Washington Thursday and Portland on Sunday.
